Looks like church bells won’t be ringing just yet for Girls creator and overall girl-about-town Lena Dunham and her boyfriend of 2-1/2 years, Jack Antonoff of both Bleachers and fun.
Speculation started bubbling when Dunham slipped and called Antonoff’s sister, Rachel, “sister-in-law” while at a Planned Parenthood party during the Sundance Film Festival. Dunham was at the festival doing double duty: promoting her documentary It’s Me Hilary, The Man Who Drew Eloise and supporting the nonprofit whom she’s previously worked with.
This was also coupled with an auspicious piece of jewelry decorating her left hand. Unfortunately for engagement speculators, it turns out the eye-catching piece of jewelry was simply a “friendship ring” from Girls co-writer Jenni Konner, as she explained to Grazia magazine. Way to let us down, lady!
Dunham went on to tell Grazia that she won’t get hitched until both her sister, Grace, and gays everywhere have to ability to get legally hitched in every state. “It’s really important for us to wait, because we both have a lot of gay friends and the idea of skipping ahead of them doesn’t feel good to us,” Dunham said. “I don’t want to do something my gay sister, Grace, can’t do in a number of states.”
Which might be sooner than you think. The Supreme Court is setting itself to be in a position where the issue of gay marriage, and its ban in several states, will finally be on the table again. Arguments on both sides of the hot topic issue will be orated in April, with a final decision being made this June. Dunham’s already voiced her support of the issue via Instagram. From that one can speculate that the ring on her finger might be a hopeful placeholder until the real thing is a possibility for every citizen. As for breaking her word? Lena’s Not That Kind of Girl.
